NEVADA COLLECTION EFFORTS UNDER INTENSE SCRUTINY
- An audit of the state of Nevada’s collection efforts has revealed that the department in charge of collecting unpaid debts to the state — the state controller’s office — is collecting about 10% of the amount it did as little as three years ago. The audit recommended that the debt collection efforts be transferred to the governor’s office. The state controller has collected under $300,000 for the fiscal year that is set to end June 30, 2016. That amount is far less than the $2.3 million that was collected during the 2013 fiscal year. The amount of unpaid debts across all Nevada state agencies is $573 million. The controller’s office recently spent nearly $2 million to develop a debt collection system that has yet to work.
TWICE AS MANY COMPANIES RAISING PRICES TO COVER COMPLIANCE COSTS: SURVEY
- The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act are making it harder for companies to access financial services, according to a survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and one-third of companies expect the regulatory burden to worsen during the next three years. Twice as many companies — up to 29% — have increased their prices to cover the additional costs of compliance.
