While she wasn’t necessarily talking specifically about collections when she said it, Mindy Chumbley did an amazing job of encapsulating the dynamic that collectors face everyday when she said that “making friends out of enemies” is her favorite outcome. Mindy was talking about working with lawmakers to change their perceptions of the ARM industry — which is something else that she has become quite adept at doing. Read on to learn more about Mindy and why she is the perfect type of person to have on your email speed-dial when you need a pick-me-up.

Length of Time at Current Company: 25 years
Length of Time in Industry: 28 years
How did you get your start in the industry?
High school job filing and working mail for a friend’s agency.
What is your career highlight so far?
Attending a bill signing with [Washington] Gov. Jay Inslee for a bill I participated in as a stakeholder with the Washington Collector’s Association. I really enjoy finding ways to work with people who assume the worst of this industry. It’s gratifying to be able to provide insight and proof of how we assist consumers, our clients, and our employees. Making friends from enemies is my favorite outcome.
When or how are you most productive?
When I have a clear goal and a long list.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
Current WCA President Scott Purcell
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I can stay the course in the midst of difficulty with hopeful tenacity.
What do you like most about this industry?
Opportunity and willingness of colleagues to share ideas.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
Frivolous lawsuits. I definitely value accountability and oversight – but the hyper-technical no harm to consumer lawsuits are not good for anyone.
Describe a typical work day.
I’m juggling all the things as a small business owner. You might find me cleaning a bathroom, working on tricky compliance language or signing the next contract. I work with a fantastic team so I get to spend a lot of my day helping them succeed. My favorite days are when I get to speak on panels, advocate for our industry, or remind friends and colleagues that kindness is powerful.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
Legislative advocacy

What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you
I’m built as an encourager. If you need a reminder that the best is yet to come, send me an email.
Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
