Matt Jubenville is a paradox. How else to describe someone who says he is sharpest at night, but doesn’t like to work then? Maybe he’s just someone who knows himself really really well. Read on to learn more about Matt, why he likes taking something and making it better, and just how different his days can be.
Name: Matt Jubenville
Job Title: VP, Associate General Counsel
Company: Midland Credit Management, Inc.
Length of time at current company: 8.5 years
Length of time in industry: 8.5 years
How did you get your start in the industry?
After leaving a national securities litigation firm, my first in-house job was at Midland in 2015.
What is your career highlight so far?
Being directly involved in multiple successful matters where federal appellate courts or the U.S. Supreme Court found in the company’s favor.
When or how are you most productive?
I’m sharpest at night, although I don’t like to work then.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
I have two: Ashish Masih, CEO of Encore Capital Group; Anne Thomas at Cavalry
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I don’t know if I do it “better” than everyone else, but I enjoy polishing written work to ensure that the reader will understand each and every argument
What do you like most about this industry?
The fact that those in the industry work together on common goals/challenges.

What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
The historical perception. Today’s industry shows compassion to consumers with economic challenges, and is highly compliant with applicable law (even though that is not always the perception).
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
If I were practicing law? Probably something related to compliance or cybersecurity. If I weren’t? Likely something related to financial literacy or wealth preservation.
Describe a typical work day.
For me, there aren’t really any typical days. One day, I’ll work the entire day on one project, the next, I’ll send 100 emails about 30 different issues, and the next, I’ll travel to a conference or a mediation. But the fact that all my days are “atypical” is a feature (not a bug) because I never get bored!
What is your guilty pleasure?
Maple Sugar Candy.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Measure twice; cut once.
What are you currently reading?
“JFK and the Unspeakable“
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I really enjoy collaborating on industry projects and learning about how others are addressing common issues/problems.
Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
Mike Gibb!
