What does it say about Makayla Hussey and proof that she found a home and career in the ARM industry that she has never thought about what she would be doing if she weren’t in this industry? A lover of all dogs, even ones named after hockey teams, Makayla has risen up the ladder at Marcam Associates and the sky is the limit. Read on to learn more about her, what the “3 o’clock funnies” are, and her new life that started last month.
Name: Makayla Hussey
Job Title: Director of Operations
Company: Marcam Associates
Length of Time at Current Company: 7 years
Length of Time in Industry: 7 years
How did you get your start in the industry?
I started off as part time IT support staff for Marcam Associates, while I was working on finishing my degree from Southern Maine Community College. From there, I worked my way through various positions before finally landing at my current role of Director of Operations.
What is your career highlight so far?
My career highlight so far was when I received the highest score for the Certified Revenue Cycle Executive (CRCE) in 2019 through the American Association of Healthcare Administration Management (AAHAM). This certification is the highest level of their four certifications (I currently have 4 out of the 5). I currently serve on the board of the local Massachusetts chapter for AAHAM (the Massachusetts Association of Patient Account Management, MAPAM).
When or how are you most productive?
I would say I am most productive first thing in the morning. We like to joke around 3 PM I start getting the “3 o’clock funnies”. I am also a big fan of making lists to prioritize and execute any open items.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
Rozanne Andersen at Finvi (formerly Ontario Systems). Her knowledge and ability to relay the ever-changing bills and regulations in layman’s terms has always inspired me. Anytime I see her speaking in a webinar I always sign up because I know she is extremely knowledgeable and up to date.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I think my ability to see strengths in others, strengths which I would consider weaknesses of my own. Building a team is not about focusing on finding people who know EVERYTHING. It is about collaboration, putting your ego aside, and bringing people to the team who bring more knowledge than you in different areas. Identify your weaknesses, embrace them, and bring in someone who takes your weakness and makes it their strength.
What do you like most about this industry?
What I like most about this industry is even though our colleagues may be our competitors, we are still able to collaborate and help each other out. It’s a relief to connect with people who are facing the same challenges and know you are not alone.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
I wish I could change the stereotype that debt collectors are harsh and only looking to collect money. Of course, collecting money is the ultimate goal; however, at Marcam Associates we are 100% healthcare collections. As a result, we also have empathy for the patients we work with. Above all we are all humans first, and we collect with a servant’s heart.
Describe a typical work day.
My typical work day is never the same! They usually consist of internal meetings, compliance research, and problem solving.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I have never really thought about this, but perhaps working with dogs in some capacity? I am an avid lover of all dogs.

My guilty pleasure would have to be my love for “trash tv” (reality tv). I love all things Bravo, Housewives, Bachelor, and anything in that realm.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
“What’s meant to be, will be.”
What are you currently reading?
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson. I just received the full series and can’t wait to read the others once finished. Or anything Reg F.
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I recently got married on October 2nd and am embracing married life with my husband, Ryan and mini–Australian Shepherd, Bruin. (Yes, named after the Boston Bruins.)
Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
Timothy Moore or Christine Telles from Marcam Associates. They have been my role models in this industry and life in general.
