- A Chicago collection agency is being sued by the Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission after an employee was “forced to endure unwelcome and offensive comments from supervisors and coworkers because of his sexual orientation” almost every single day of his employment.
AGENCY OWNER GETS SIX MONTHS IN PRISON FOR WIRE FRAUD
- A Florida collection agency owner has been sentenced to six months in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of wire fraud. The owner was hired at a Florida hospital and then encouraged the hospital to use her agency, without telling them she was the owner. As well, the owner and her sister were involved in a scam with a Florida medical practice that saw the pair embezzle more than $1.5 million.
COLLECTORS LOBBY AGAINST PROPOSAL TO SHORTEN SOL IN MASSACHUSETTS
- Representatives from the New England Collectors Association testified on Monday before the state’s Joint Committee on Financial Services, urging them not to go forward with a proposal that would shorten the statute of limitations to four years from six. Shortening the statute of limitations would limit collectors’ ability to engage in long-term payment plans with individuals who are trying to repay their debts.
