NY DFS REACHES SETTLEMENT WITH PAYDAY LENDERS OVER COLLECTION TACTICS
- The New York State Department of Financial Services has reached a settlement with two payday lenders that will see up to $12 million of loans forgiven because the lenders were using illegal debt collection tactics. Payday lending is also illegal in New York State.
OHIO TOWN STRUGGLING WITH UNPAID TICKETS
- Nearly 90% of ticketed individuals in the jurisdiction of Berea, Ohio have not paid their fines, an amount that totals more than $800,000. The amount owed is $50,000 than it was a year ago. The town does ultimately send the unpaid accounts to a pair of collection agencies if an individual does not show up for a scheduled hearing.
BILLING MISTAKE LEADS TO COLLECTION PROBLEMS FOR VETERAN
- It’s the cautionary tale that everyone in the industry worries about. A veteran who went to the hospital with severe stomach pains received bills from the facility and a collection agency for more than a year, which ended up impacting his credit score, even though he was being told by the Veterans Administration that the bills had been paid. The ultimate problem was a billing mistake that ended up causing all of the problems, but even after a television station intervened, it still took more than two dozen emails to get the problem solved.
