CITY FORGETS TO SEND ACCOUNTS TO NEW COLLECTION AGENCY
- As the city of Delray Beach, Fla., was switching collection agencies it used to recover unpaid parking tickets, it forgot to send accounts to the new agency. As a result, more than $2 million in unpaid accounts sat idle for more than nine months. The city’s finance director said it was an oversight that “fell through the cracks.” It just goes to show that while the customer is always right, it is never always the collection agency’s fault if there is a low recovery rate.
UNPAID CHILDCARE FEES CAUSING COLLECTION CRISIS IN AUSTRALIA
- In Australia, a new debt collection “crisis” is blooming — unpaid childcare fees. Parents are hopping from one childcare agency to the next and not paying their bills, according to the country’s largest collection agency. The average unpaid childcare bill is $1,200. Parents are switching from one facility to another when they fall behind in payments. The CEO of the collection agency is calling on childcare centers to conduct credit checks as part of the initiation process.
DEFENSE DEPT. TO STOP TRYING TO COLLECT DISPUTED ENLISTMENT BONUSES
- After spending years aggressively trying to recoup hundreds of millions of dollars in disputed enlistment bonuses, the Department of Defense will stop trying to collect $190 million from members of the California National Guard. The situation gained national attention a couple of years ago after some of the aggressive tactics, including hiring collection agencies to try and recover the money, were brought to light.
IRS REVOKES HOSPITAL’S NON-PROFIT STATUS FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH 501(r)
- The Internal Revenue Service has — for the first time — revoked the non-profit status of a hospital for failing to meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. While the hospital was not publicly named, the IRS did say it was a small, rural facility. In order to maintain its non-profit status, hospitals must comply with section 501(r) of the ACA, which dictates conducting a needs assessment to determine wether patients are eligible for financial assistance prior to initiating collection efforts.
