There are a growing number of signs that Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, will be resigning in the near term in order to run for governor of Ohio.
Cordray has been announced as the keynote speaker for the Ohio Land Bank Conference on Sept. 12. The conference will take place in Cleveland, Ohio and will be held on the same day as a recently scheduled gubernatorial debate. The five other Democratic candidates for governor have all committed to attending the debate, which will be held near Columbus, Ohio.
What is interesting about Cordray’s speech is the topic: re-purposing vacant and abandoned properties and revitalizing our neighborhoods. It bears little in common with his role as director of the CFPB and its oversight of financial products.
An observant law firm also noted that the CFPB has scheduled a Credit Union Advisory Council meeting for Sept. 7, and unlike previous meetings, Cordray will not be making any remarks. Acting Deputy Director David Silberman will be present at the CUAC meeting and will make a speech that day.
Cordray is also scheduled to deliver a speech at a Labor Day picnic in Cincinnati this coming weekend.
Cordray has been rumored to be mulling a run for governor of Ohio for months. Prior to his role at the CFPB, Cordray was the attorney general of Ohio.
