GROUP CALLS FOR STRONGER DEBT COLLECTION LAWS AT STATE LEVEL
- The National Black Caucus of State Legislators has adopted a resolution calling on state legislatures across the country to strengthen consumer protections and end abusive debt collection activities. The NBCSL resolution also endorses the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s efforts to promulgate a debt collection rule at the federal level. As questions swirl about the fate of the CFPB and its director, Richard Cordray, consumer advocates may take their lobbying efforts to the state level to see additional rules and laws enacted. It bears watching how those efforts, combined with the receptive ears of groups like the NBCSL could impact the regulatory burden on collection agencies at the lower levels of government.
BANNED DEBT COLLECTOR KEPT ON SCAMMING
- Nelson Macwan is a name already on the list of banned debt collectors in the state of Illinois, but that did not stop the man from continuing to scam individuals out of money. One woman was taken for $30,000 by Macwan, who is now facing criminal charges for his actions.
LINDALA TALKS ABOUT HOLES IN HIRING PROCESS AT COLLECTION AGENCIES
- Bill Lindala wants to help those collection agencies that are not conducting thorough background checks of job candidates or new hires. The new director of investigation services for ARM Security & Investigations also wants to help collection agencies pre-screen candidates for job openings. Lindala also talked about the holes in the hiring process that could lead to problems for collection agencies.
BANKRUPTCY FILINGS UP FOR SECOND STRAIGHT MONTH; HAS NOT HAPPENED IN SEVEN YEARS
- Bankruptcy filings were up for two consecutive months for the first time since 2010, according to data released yesterday by the American Bankruptcy Institute. The number of filings in January was 5% higher than the same month last year, following a similar increase in December. Rising interest rates and increased debt burdens are the likely causes of the increase in filings, the ABI said.
