PAIR USE DEBT COLLECTION AS REASON TO GET SKIPTRACING ACCOUNT; INSTEAD THEY USE IT TO STEAL 

  • A pair of North Carolina residents who obtained an account from TransUnion Risk and Alternative Data Solutions, Inc., which operates TLO.com, because they said they were going to be using the skiptracing service for debt collection purposes, instead used it to steal the personal information of up to 200 people in order to obtain credit cards in the names of those individuals. The breach may have exposed the private information of up to 10,000 individuals, according to prosecutors, who were arrested last month.

CFPB FILES AMICUS BRIEF IN SUPREME COURT FDCPA CASE

  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act case regarding a claim in a consumer’s bankruptcy case even though the debt is time-barred. The CFPB is arguing in favor of the individual. The case is Midland Funding, LLC v. Aleida Johnson.
