RETAILER AGREES TO HUGE SETTLEMENT AFTER BEING ACCUSED OF SHADY DEBT COLLECTION TACTICS
- A bankrupt chain of retail stores that specialized in lending to members of the military has agreed to pay $40 million in fines and forgive $95 million in debts as part of a settlement with 49 states and the District of Columbia. The company, USA Discounters, was accused of taking advantage of customers during just about every stage in the transaction process, including misleading them about the quality of the merchandise it was selling, the terms of its loan contracts, and aggressive debt collection tactics, which included calls to the commanding officers of customers who were in the military and suing customers in the state of Virginia, no matter where they were stationed. The company did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
DEBT COLLECTION CASE ALLEGES WOMEN WERE SHILLS FOR HIGH ROLLERS
- A Las Vegas casino is trying to collect more than $6 million in unpaid markers that were taken out by a pair of Chinese women, but attorneys for the women claim they are local housekeepers who were recruited to sign for the markers for wealthy clients who wanted to play without leaving a paper trail. Prosecutors are seeking criminal charges against the women.
