Nearly one-in-10 lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate have outstanding student loan debt, according to a published report.
The 53 individuals owe a combined total of $1.8 million in student loans. The 53 was almost split down the middle, according to party lines. There were 28 Republicans on the list, who owe a total of $830,000. The 25 Democrats on the list owe more than $1 million.
Rep. Trey Gowdy [R-S.C.] is the Congressman with the most outstanding student loan debt. He still owes $150,000, according to the report. Rep. Gowdy is followed by Rep. Raul Diaz [D-Calif.], who owes $115,000, and Rep. Cedric Richmond [D-Louis.], who also owes $115,000. Rep. Diaz received an M.D. and two Master’s Degrees from Harvard.
Of the 53, only three of them are Senators – Sen. Chris Murphy [D-Conn.], Sen. Cory Gardner [D-Colo.], and Sen. Mike Lee [R-Utah], who each owe less than $30,000.
