BILL INTRODUCED TO RENAME, RESHAPE CFPB
- A quartet of House members — two Democrats and two Republicans — yesterday introduced a bill that would rename and reshape the leadership structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The bill, if passed, would rename the CFPB the Financial Product Safety Commission and change the leadership structure from a single executive director to a five-person commission, similar to how the FTC and FCC are operated.
COURT DISMISSES CASE AGAINST AGENCY ITEMIZING INTEREST IN LETTER
- A federal judge in Illinois has acknowledged the dilemma facing debt collectors who are between “a rock and a hard place” when it comes to including information about interest and other charges or fees in a collection letter. The judge granted a motion to dismiss last week that was filed by the defendant, a collection agency.
NEARLY 10% OF FEDERAL LAWMAKERS OWE COMBINED TOTAL OF $1.8 MILLION IN UNPAID STUDENT LOANS
- Nearly one-in-10 lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate have outstanding student loan debt, according to a published report. The 53 individuals owe a combined total of $1.8 million in student loans. The 53 was almost split down the middle, according to party lines. There were 28 Republicans on the list, who owe a total of $830,000. The 25 Democrats on the list owe more than $1 million.
CFPB ISSUES RFI ON ADOPTED RULES & RULEMAKING AUTHORITY
- It seems as though the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau only makes the headlines now when it announces the next in a long line of reviews of its operation. The agency announced yesterday that it was opening a review of its adopted regulations and new rulemaking authorities. This is the eighth such request the CFPB has issued in the past two months.
