GUILTY PLEA HAS DEBT COLLECTION SCAMMER FACING 20 YEARS IN PRISON
- A second individual involved in a debt collection scam in North Carolina has pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud and wire fraud. John Wayne Perry, Jr. faces up to 20 years in prison. The company, Berkeley Hughes & Associates was the name used by the group when it collected nearly $3 million in fake debts from individuals.
FIVE STATES REACH $500K SETTLEMENT WITH IQOR UNITS
- Regulators from five states — Idaho, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and North Dakota — have reached a $500,000 settlement with two subsidiaries of IQor Holdings related to failure to comply with state and federal consumer protection laws. The two units are Allied Interstate LLC and The Receivable Management Services Corp. The $500,000 settlement is being divided up equally among the five states.
VETERAN COMES HOME AND TAKES FIGHT TO DEBT COLLECTORS
- Ray Bueno is a former Marine who served two tours before returning home in 2013. When he came home, he paid $3,850 over an 11-month span to a fake debt collection company that was threatening him. The experience led Ray to create his own YouTube channel, “Keeping it Real With Credit.” The channel has more than 47,000 subscribers. Bueno has uploaded 13 different videos, most of them during the last couple of months. The topics in his videos range from talking with a lawyer about what people should know about wage garnishment to “How to Collect From the Debt Collector.”

- A Texas woman was receiving calls from debt collectors over an unpaid medical bill. The problem? The bill was for a sexual assault examination after she claimed she had been attacked by a co-worker.
