JUDGE DENIES CERTIFICATION, DEFENDANTS’ MSJ IN FDCPA CLASS ACTION
- A District Court judge in Washington has denied a plaintiff’s motion to certify a class while also denying motions for summary judgment from a number of defendants in a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act case stemming from a consent order between one of the defendants and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

COVID HELPED BOOST CREDIT SCORES, BUT WILL THEY STAY THERE?
- In what should come as a surprise to nobody in the accounts receivable management industry, the average credit scores for consumers increased during the pandemic, according to a report released last week by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. While the report cited mortgage forbearance agreements, pauses on repaying student loans, and stimulus packages from the federal government, it’s what those funds were used for — paying down old debts, in many cases — that improved consumers’ credit scores during the pandemic.

FCC TAKES MORE ACTION TO FIGHT ILLEGAL ROBOCALLS
- The Federal Communications Commission last week put voice service providers on notice that it is taking its fight against illegal robocalls seriously, ordering a pair of providers to stop carrying suspected illegal robocalls while also telling all providers to investigate their networks for signs of alleged illegal activity and report back to the FCC what they are doing to stop it, or run the risk of an FCC enforcement action.
