CFPB ANNOUNCES SETTLEMENT WITH STUDENT LOAN HOLDER, DEBT COLLECTOR
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau yesterday announced a settlement with the National Collegiate Student Loan Trusts, in which the trusts will pay $19 million in penalties and audit all 800,000 of its loans to make sure it has the proper documentation should it choose to sue an individual in the future. Transworld Systems, a debt collector hired by the trusts, will also pay $2.5 million in fines. The the NCSLT is being required to audit all of the loans it owns was hailed by consumer lawyers as “unprecedented,” and “fantastic.”
MICHIGAN LEGISLATURE CONSIDERS BILL TO ALLOW AGENCIES TO HIRE ATTORNEYS
- The Michigan legislature is considering a bill that would allow collection agencies to hire an attorney for litigation services or compliance-related activities. The state is one of the few that prohibit collection agencies from hiring attorneys on staff, according to ACA International.
