POKER PLAYER CAN’T KEEP POKER FACE WHEN ADMITTING TO COLLECTION SCAM
- A professional poker player broke down when admitting to his crimes during his plea hearing yesterday and is facing 40 years in prison after running a scam for five years intimidating and threatening criminal charges on individuals if they did not pay their debts. Travell Thomas was the mastermind of the scam, which netted $31 million in total, $750,000 of that for Thomas. It was a striking turn of events for Thomas, who claimed racism on the part of U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara when the charges were initially laid.
CREDIT CARD NUMBERS, BALANCES CONTINUE TO CLIMB
- The number of new credit card accounts and the total number of open credit cards both increased in the second quarter, compared with the same period a year earlier, according to data released by the American Bankers Association. The average credit lines also increased for borrowers with good, and less-than-perfect credit scores. As well, the number of individuals paying off their credit card balances in full every month also increased, and is near a post-recession high.
HEALTHCARE FIRM HIRES NEW REVENUE CYCLE MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR
- Sovereign Health, which operates nine behavioral health treatment centers in five states, has hired April Gledhill as the director of revenue cycle management. Gledhill was most recently the corporate business office director at Acadia Healthcare in Tennessee. According to a press release announcing the hiring. Gledhill has a “proven track record of improving revenue cycle operations.”
