  • An interesting analysis of the Spokeo v. Robins Supreme Court ruling that concludes that companies did not get what they were hoping for in the ruling. While the Supreme Court ruled that plaintiffs must show “concrete” harm in order to pursue statutory damages, companies that were seeking a Constitutional amendment that would immunize “corporations from these claims and severely limiting Congress’ power to say who could sue them” fell short and that was the big news, the author concludes.

IS CFPB DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD WITH PROPOSED PAYDAY LENDING RULE?

  • The New York Times steps in and uses the city of Canton, Ohio, a payday lending hotbed, to attempt to analyze the impact of the proposed rule issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. While consumer advocates claim that payday loans trap individuals in a downward spiral of debt, the industry and other supporters claim that low-income individuals will have nowhere to turn if payday lenders disappear. When payday loans disappear from a given area, demand for them does not, according to one study.
