CALIF. COUNTY AWASH IN UNPAID DEBTS, LACKS NECESSARY COMPONENTS TO IMPROVE COLLECTION RATE
- Sacramento County, California, has more than $658 million in unpaid debts owed to it by individuals, according to a grand jury report. That figure is nearly double what was owed eight years ago. The county is currently recovering about 6% of what it is owed by individuals, and does not have a plan to figure out how to improve that figure. As well, the county is not properly keeping track of debt payments that are made, according to the report. A $4.4 million investment in the county’s debt recovery computer system has ballooned to $12 million and has not fulfilled the vendor’s stated goal of improving collection rates to as high as 38%.
