Daily Digest – January 13. Student Loan Solutions; Pirates Settle Robocall Suit

NO MORE PAPER, NO MORE BOOKS …

  • President Obama used his final State of The Union address to share his vision for the future of higher education. At a time when the delinquency and default rates on student loans continue to rise, the president said that it’s the government’s job to make college more affordable for everyone who earns the opportunity to go. “No hardworking student should be stuck in the red,” Obama said during his address last night.

PIRATES HAVE RIGHTS, TOO

  • People who illegally downloaded music have rights, too. That includes the right not to receive robocalls and texts from the legal rights holders demanding payment for allegedly engaging in that illegal activity.

DUH

  • Because people might not know when they are being contacted by a legitimate collection agency, contracted with the Internal Revenue Service or if they are being scammed is the reason why the IRS should not outsource collections of unpaid taxes to third-party agencies, according to the Christian Science Monitor. Because people might not open letters and because they might pay the agency instead of paying the IRS are also reasons not to deploy the program.
