JUDGE APPROVES $2M SETTLEMENT IN FDCPA CASE
- A debt collector in Oregon has agreed to pay $2 million to settle claims it violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act against a class of plaintiffs for charging an “issuance fee” of $45 when garnishing the assets of individuals with unpaid debts.

- A District Court judge in Ohio has reduced the attorney’s fees to be paid to a plaintiff in a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act case by more than 20%, awarding them nearly $90,000 after a jury found for the plaintiff and awarded $50,000 in actual damages and $1,000 in statutory damages.
BILL INTRODUCED IN N.C. TO RESTRICT HOW MEDICAL DEBTS ARE COLLECTED
- A bill has been introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly that would set new rules for how medical debts are collected in the state and one need look no further than the name of the bill to get a sense of where the authors got the idea for the proposed legislation — the Medical Debt De-Weaponization Act.
JUDGE GRANTS INJUNCTION ALLOWING NON-LAWYERS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS SUED FOR UNPAID DEBTS
- A District Court judge in New York has granted a preliminary injunction prohibiting the state Attorney General from enforcing a law that bars non-lawyers from practicing law in the state, in a case that was filed to allow volunteers to help individuals being sued for their unpaid debts.
