FIRMS REACH $4 MILLION SETTLEMENT IN CLASS-ACTION FDCPA SUIT
- A number of ARM industry companies have reached a $3.9 million settlement in a class-action case filed against them after they were accused of improperly obtaining default judgments on unpaid wireless phone debts. A final approval and fairness hearing for the settlement has been set for April 10.
LAW FIRM, STUDENT LENDER HIT WITH FDCPA SUIT OVER LETTER
- A collection law firm and a student loan company have had a class-action lawsuit filed against them, with the plaintiff accusing the defendants of raising the “specter of potential legal action,” because a collection letter was signed by an attorney. Having a letter signed by an attorney was enough to indicate that the defendants were “proceeding more aggressively” in attempting to collect on the debt.
