APPEALS COURT RULES THIRD-PARTY DISCLOSURE ONLY APPLIES TO CONSUMERS
- The ruling from the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a lower court’s ruling that an attorney who inadvertently received a letter to someone who wasn’t his client can not sue for a third-party disclosure violation under the FDCPA.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS BUYING, FORGIVING RESIDENTS’ UNPAID MEDICAL DEBTS
- The city council of Toledo, Ohio is considering an ordinance that would earmark $1.4 million of funds received from the federal government to buy up to $200 million of unpaid medical debts of its residents and forgive those debts.
- A vote on the ordinance could come as early as next week.
- If approved, the move could impact 25,000 residents of the city.

JUDGE DENIES MTD IN FDCPA CASE OVER DISPUTED DEBT
- A defendant can not use the statute of limitations in the FDCPA or state law in Washington because it should have considered two dispute letters set by the plaintiff to be indication of an informal appearance in an underlying collection action, ruled a District Court judge.
- The judgment had been lying dormant for 10 years before the defendant filed an extension to renew it, triggering the plaintiff’s lawsuit.
