Name: Matt Scott
Current Role/Job Title: Senior Director who oversees the Collections Professional Services side of the company.
Company: Emprise Technologies
Length of time at current company: I joined in August 2011 (11 years)
Length of time in industry: 11 years
How did you get your start in the industry?
As a young boy, it was my dream like the rest of us. I was looking to start a new career and found Emprise be a place where I could apply my technical skills and work with a wide array of clients as a Project Manager.
What is your career highlight so far?
Help growing a local Toledo, Ohio 15-person consulting company to a 50-person company who works with 1st/3rd party agencies and non-collection companies around the USA and even have a handful of international clients.
When or how are you most productive?
I don’t have a specific time I am productive but I need my morning caffeine, workout then I open my day before I jump in. What are the high-payoff activities I need to complete before the day is over? I make sure those are all done then move on to the next lower priority but still important goals.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
The first person that comes to mind is our CEO, Marc Savage. Anyone who starts a business and puts it all on the line with no backup plan takes courage. From a work perspective, he lets me do my job, gives me advice if I ask for it or need, and provides support when necessary.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
Better than everyone? That is pretty bold 😊, I am very good at creating and maintaining relationships. For me, it is all about intent, this industry is too niche to have enemies or negative relationships. Ten minutes later, I just thought of it, I am funnier than everyone else, take that Loscavio (you are a good sidekick).
What do you like most about this industry?
I like that it is small and everyone seems to know everyone, and if you don’t, you will.

What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
Technology adoption, we don’t have to be the first but we shouldn’t be the last. There are rules and regulations to follow but having more urgency would be great to see. Don’t settle for, “this is how we have always done it” as an excuse. Be curious and try things out in small doses to see if it works for your company.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
If I didn’t need money, just hanging out with the family at the lake and drinking some bourbon and go all in on podcasting. If I had to work, I would be in a role similar to what I am doing today high people interaction & engagement at conferences and growing a company.
Describe a typical work day.
For me, there is not a typical work day in the software/technology consulting space. There are a few constants for me though, I open my day with priorities that need to get completed today and attend multiple standups with the management and development teams to ensure all priorities are aligned. I get the opportunity to coach our managers and development team on soft skills and being better professionals throughout the day.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I am still a video gamer at heart so now that I have a 7-year-old, we get to play mobile, Nintendo and Xbox together. I never let him win: it builds character 😊 and we are both competitive.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I am big podcast listener over the last 15 years and each day I hear something that is great that I can apply to my life.
The 2 that I am real big on lately are:
- “Too many fingers and not enough thumbs.” Stop pointing at other people and blaming them. Be accountable. Extreme ownership is something people need more of.
- “Too many people say OR instead of AND.” Why should there only be one option? Why can’t you do more than one task when approached with an opportunity.
What are you currently reading?
“Twelve and a Half: Leveraging the Emotional Ingredients Necessary for Business Success” by Gary Vaynerchuk. I have some extra copies to give away if anyone wants them let me know.
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I don’t take myself too seriously, love creating relationships, always try to make people laugh, and if I am able to help you out with the services we offer, great. But if not, no hard feelings and hope we created a connection that lasts a long time.
Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
I nominate Michael Loscavio from REPAY to take on this challenge.
