CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR SIGNS DEBT COLLECTION ID THEFT BILL INTO LAW
- The Governor of California has signed a debt collection bill into law that will adjust how collectors address situations where an individual claims a debt is fraudulent as a result of identity theft. There was no effective date written into the statute, which means the law is likely going to take effect on January 1, 2022.
HEARING TODAY TO DISCUSS RULES IMPLEMENTING N.M. MEDICAL DEBT COLLECTION LAW
- A virtual hearing is being held this morning, and comments are due later this afternoon to the New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance to implement a new law that went into effect this year governing how medical debt is being collected. Consumer advocates are doing their part to get the word out about the loopholes in the law that they want to see closed, so it’s important for the industry to make sure it is heard as well.

- In a case that was defended by the team at Malone Frost Martin, a District Court judge in Illinois has granted a defendant’s motion to dismiss after it was sued for violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by allegedly making conflicting and overshadowing claims in a collection letter.
