Did Amber Billman’s last name pre-determine the career she would have? Not likely. But it is an interesting coincidence, especially considering how much she dislikes talking on the phone. Read on to learn more about Amber, how she can likely teach you a thing or two about coffee, and just how much she relishes that anything can happen on any given day.

How did you get your start in the industry?
I started in insurance billing, and moved in to patient collections.
What is your career highlight so far?
I would definitely say it was being voted by my company board as President and CEO of our company.
When or how are you most productive?
I am a morning person, and love to come in and knock things out.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
I admire the collectors that are on the frontlines day in and day out. They are truly the backbone of the collections industry.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I have lots of empathy for the debtors. In this industry empathy and respect are so important, and you never know what a debtor is going through at any time. I remind my collectors of this all the time.
What do you like most about this industry?
I like that we make a difference for our client, but also for the U.S. economy.
Describe a typical work day.
I would say that there is no “typical” to my days. They are all uniquely different, and sometimes crazier than others. I guess that is one of my favorite things about my job, is that you never know what the day is going to bring, and you never get bored.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
I wish the stigma of being a debt collector would be erased. True debt collectors are honest hard workers, and follow the rules and laws. There should be no shame to being a debt collector.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I would have gone to nursing school.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I am addicted to coffee. I am a self-proclaimed connoisseur.
