Account Control Technology is laying off nearly 175 workers in two Texas offices, according to a pair of published reports.
About 100 employees have already been laid off from the company’s office in Dallas. Another 72 employees will be laid off in August from a company office in San Angelo, Texas.
The reports tied the layoffs to a failed challenge of a contract from the Department of Education that was awarded to two other collection agencies – Performant Financial and Windham Professionals – which were subsequently canceled. ACT joined together with a number of other firms that mounted a legal challenge to the bidding process.
ACT opened the San Angelo office in 2006, according to a published report, promising to bring 200 jobs to the region. The company received an incentive package that offered up to $750,000 based on the number of employees it brought to San Angelo.
The layoffs were announced by the Texas Workforce Commission.
ACT has 850 full-time employees, according to its website, and has four offices nationwide — Bakersfield, Calif., Mason, Ohio, Dallas, and San Angelo. The company declined to comment about the layoffs, according to one of the reports.
