Anthony Alexis, the enforcement director at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is leaving the agency. The announcement was made to CFPB staff on Thursday afternoon.
Alexis has been with the CFPB since 2012. He was previously a partner at the law firm of Mayer Brown. The date of his departure from the CFPB was not made public.
The CFPB has posted the position but is only considering internal candidates at this time. A published report said that Alexis’s departure will fuel speculation that CFPB Director Richard Cordray is leaving his job to run for governor of Ohio.
Alexis was originally named acting director of enforcement in 2013 and had the acting title removed in 2015. The CFPB has taken an active enforcement role in the ARM industry and there are questions as to whether that will continue under a new director.
Republican lawmakers are continuing to try and reduce or eliminate the CFPB’s enforcement authority as the agency — and the financial services world in general — await a ruling from an Appeals Court regarding the constitutionality of the agency’s leadership structure.
