CALIF. LEGISLATURE CONSIDERS BILL TO PROTECT MONEY FROM JUDGMENTS
- The California legislature is considering a bill that would protect more of an individual’s assets from judgments. The bill would prevent companies that have judgments from emptying the bank accounts of the individuals with unpaid debts. Instead, companies would be required to leave at least two month’s worth of wages at the state’s minimum wage in the accounts. California would join more than a dozen other states that have enacted similar consumer protections.
HOUSE COMMITTEE HOLDING HEARING TO AMEND FDCPA
- The House Financial Services Committee is holding a hearing today to discuss a number of bills related to debt collection. One of the bills, H.R. 1849, the Practice of Law Technical Clarification Act would amend the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to amend the definition of “debt collector” to exclude certain categories of law firms.
HOUSEHOLDS SPENDING MORE THAN EVER BEFORE
- The average household spent more money last year than every before, according to data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The $57,311 spent by each household, on average, marked the second straight annual increase following a decade of stagnant numbers. Housing accounts for nearly one third of all household spending.
