- Fumiko Chino seems uniquely suited to talk about the financial effects on an individual’s healthcare. Now a radiation oncologist at Duke University who is studying the impact of financial strain on cancer patients, she was once the young girlfriend of a man who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The boyfriend, Andrew Ladd, ultimately died as a result of the disease. Now, 10 years later, Chino is no longer answering calls from debt collectors trying to recover unpaid medical debts while Ladd was in treatment. She is part of a team that released a study earlier this month examining the financial impact of treatment on cancer patients.
CITY HIRES COLLECTION AGENCY TO RECOVER RALLY EXPENSES FROM SANDERS CAMPAIGN
- A California city has hired a collection agency to recoup $31,000 in unpaid expenses owed by the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders, who held a rally there last year. The expenses, which were originally $28,000 but have increased because of late fees, covered overtime the city had to pay employees to stage and secure the event.
U.K. LENDER COLLAPSING AS COLLECTION RECOVERY RATE PLUMMETS
- It’s worth mentioning the crisis at Provident Financial, a subprime lender in the U.K. The company’s stock price has plummeted by 60% in the past two days after it issued an alert about “substantial deterioration” in the performance of its loan portfolio. The CEO of the company subsequently resigned and now all hell is breaking loose. The company’s recovery rate is at 57% this year, compared with 90% a year ago.
