FIFTH DEFENDANT PLEADS GUILTY IN DEBT COLLECTION SCAM
- Another defendant has pleaded guilty in a debt collection scam being run out of North Carolina. Rhonda Scott is the fifth of six defendants to plead guilty in the case, which alleges that RJ Financial used scare tactics and intimidation to collect more than $3 million from individuals. Each of the defendants is facing up to 20 years in prison.
CFPB, 13 STATES REACH $183 MILLION SETTLEMENT WITH AEQUITAS CAPITAL
- Aequitas Capital Management, an investment that was involved in funding student loans made by Corinthian Colleges, will forgive up to $183 million in debts after reaching a settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and 13 state attorneys general. The $183 million covers nearly 41,000 former students. Aequitas has since filed for bankruptcy protection. Many of the 41,000 individuals were behind on payments or had defaulted on their loans and had their accounts placed with debt collectors.
