- For the first time, the ARM industry has a defined process when buying and selling judgments. The Receivables Management Association last month released an update to its Receivables Management Certification Program (RMCP) that covers the sale of assets secured by a judgment.
DEBT BUYER FINED $25 MILLION ASKS FOR NEW TRIAL
- A Houston debt buyer who was fined $25 million after being convicted of improperly suing more than 900 individuals has requested a new trial. Joseph Onwuteaka claims that the jury extrapolated evidence it heard from just a few witnesses and the award was not supported by evidence that Onwuteaka or his firm violated any state law or statute.
UNIVERSITIES IN SPOTLIGHT FOR SENDING UNPAID TUITION ACCOUNTS TO COLLECTION AGENCIES
- Public colleges and universities in Virginia are in the spotlight for sending unpaid tuition accounts to collection agencies, often while the individuals are still trying to get their degrees. The collection agencies often tack on fees as high as 30% to the outstanding balance, which makes it more difficult for individuals to pay off the debts. Colleges and universities are fighting against dwindling budgets and are using the collection agencies to cover expenses.
BK FILINGS DECREASE IN JULY
- The total number of consumer and commercial bankruptcy filings declined 8% in July, compared with June, according to data released by the American Bankruptcy Institute. On a year-over-year basis, commercial filings were down slightly while the number of consumer filings was marginally higher than last July.
