DEPT. OF JUSTICE INDICATES INTENT TO SUPPORT PHH IN CASE AGAINST CFPB
- The United States government appears to have flipped sides and is now supporting PHH Corp. in its lawsuit against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Solicitor General’s office asked for an extension until March 17 to file its amicus brief in the case, which is being heard before the entire Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Briefs supporting PHH are supposed to be filed by March 10. Briefs supporting the CFPB are supposed to be filed by March 31. By asking for an extension until March 17, it appears as though the Department of Justice’s brief will support PHH’s case that the leadership structure of the CFPB is unconstitutional. While President Obama was still in office, the DOJ had filed a brief in support of the CFPB.
DEBT BUYER OFFERS TO PURCHASE CITY’S UNPAID TAX DEBTS
- It appears as though a company is offering to purchase the unpaid tax liens levied by the city of Hazleton, Penn., to help offset a cash crisis within the local government. Municipal Revenue Service has offered $387,000 to purchase $421,000 of unpaid debt, which has sparked a debate between the city council, who wants to take the deal, and the mayor, who wants the debts to go through the normal collection process to avoid giving up the chance to collect more than $30,000.
SCHOOL DISTRICT HIRES COLLECTION AGENCY
- The Lake Central School District in Indiana is dealing with nearly $300,000 budget shortfall this year, largely because of unpaid fees for things such as textbook rentals and athletic program fees. The district has moved forward and is hiring a collection agency to try and recover some of those unpaid fees.
