TOWN DEALING WITH MASSIVE INCREASE IN UNPAID DEBTS
- Sometimes, even a collection agency is not enough. That is the case in Findlay, Ohio, where the amount of unpaid debts owed to the municipal court has more than quadrupled to $11 million during the past six years. The city is reviving a program to bring in defendants with unpaid debts for a hearing with a probation officer because “the collection agency isn’t enough to get it done anymore,” said a municipal judge.
MCNAMARA PROMOTION MADE OFFICIAL AS ONE OF A NUMBER OF CFPB PERSONNEL CHANGES
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau got around to announcing a number of promotions on Friday, including removing the acting from the job title of John McNamara and naming him the assistant director of consumer lending, reporting, and collections markets. McNamara’s title became official just before the holidays. He has been at the bureau since 2014 when he was hired as the debt collection program manager.
TCPA MODERNIZATION ADVOCATE NAMED CHAIR OF HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE
- A Tennessee Republican who advocated on behalf modernizing the Telephone Consumer Protection Act has been named chairwoman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. Rep. Marsha Blackburn [R-Tenn.] replaces Rep. Greg Walden [R-Ore.] who is now chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
NEW COMPANY AIMS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS MANAGE STUDENT LOAN DEBT
- The son of the couple that founded skiptracing company VeriFacts has hung out his own shingle and started a company that aims to help individuals manage their student loan debts. Jim Gabler has started Steel River Systems, which puts individuals on income-based repayment plans to pay off their student loan debts.
