CFPB, NY AG FILE SUIT AGAINST ALLEGED ILLEGAL DEBT COLLECTION SCAMMERS
- The CFPB and the Attorney General of New York filed suit yesterday against two individuals alleging the defendants purchased tens of millions of dollars in consumer debt, adding $200 to the balance that was owed, and then attempted to collect on the debts or placed the accounts with other agencies. When collecting the debt for themselves, the defendants allegedly impersonated law enforcement officials and threatened consumers with arrest.
DEFENDANT IN CFPB CASE MAY HAVE TWIN BROTHER WHO WAS SUED BY FTC
- One of the defendants in the lawsuit filed yesterday by the CFPB appears to be the twin brother of a man who was part of a massive debt collection scheme and as sued by the Federal Trade Commission last year. According to an order signed earlier this year, there is a Douglas MacKinnon who is the twin brother of Gregory MacKinnon. Douglas MacKinnon was one of the defendants in the CFPB suit filed yesterday. Last year, Gregory MacKinnon was sued by the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General of New York as part of a huge effort to shut down two debt collection operations that collected $45 million in “supposed” debts.
WORKING MOMS LACK FUNDS TO PAY FOR HEALTHCARE: SURVEY
- Nearly half of working mothers who participated in a survey conducted by Aflac and Working Mother magazine do not have enough money to cover their health insurance deductible if they needed to do so today. More than half have had to divert money from other areas, such as vacations, date nights, holiday gifts and college funds, to pay for medical expenses.
CFPB RELEASES SUPERVISORY REPORT FOR FALL
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released its Supervisory Highlights for Fall 2016 earlier this week. The report highlights the rulemaking and enforcement actions taken by the CFPB during the past few months.
