JUDGE APPROVES $12M SETTLEMENT IN TCPA CONSENT SUIT
- A federal judge has approved a $12.1 million settlement involving a mortgage lender that allegedly used an autodialer to contact the mobile phones of individuals without they consent. There are more than 146,000 members of the class who will receive $45 each, while the plaintiffs’ lawyers will net $3.1 million. They had asked for $3.6 million but a judge denied the request. There were more than 2 million people who allegedly received the calls, according to the suit.
CFPB ASSESSES LARGEST FINE EVER; $185 MILLION TO WELLS FARGO
- It does not have much to do with debt collections, but the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau yesterday levied $185 million in fines to Wells Fargo for allegedly opening up 2 million fake bank and credit card accounts to meet aggressive sales goals set by the bank. It is the largest fine ever imposed by the CFPB in its five-year existence. The bank said it has fired the employees responsible for the problem. A published report indicates that more than 5,000 employees were let go.
STUDY CITES PAYDAY LENDING AS A RISK TO PUBLIC HEALTH
- The Glasgow Center for Public Health in Scotland has published a report on the mental and physical effects of payday lending on individuals. The report called payday lending “corrosive” and puts vulnerable individuals at further risk by exacerbating mental and physical health problems.
HIKERS NOT REPAYING DEBTS FOR BEING RESCUED
- The city of El Paso, Texas, has spent nearly $200,000 rescuing hikers who get stranded or lost on the Franklin Mountains, and only $1,200 of that has been repaid by those who were rescued.
