Travel Thomas was one of 11 accused of taking more than $30 million from individuals using coercive and deceptive debt collection tactics. Thomas’s lawyers argued that the only two owners of debt collection offices prosecuted by Bharara’s office are black.

According to the settlement orders, the plaintiff received calls on her mobile phone made by an autodialer that she did not consent to receiving. At the same time, Wells will pay more than $4 million in penalties after being accused by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau of charging illegal fees and failing to update inaccurate credit information on student loan borrowers.
