REPORT AIMS TO ASSESS IMPACT OF LOCAL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS ON DEBT COLLECTIONS
- Individuals in the southern and western states are more likely to have a debt in collections, according to a report issued by The Urban Institute. The report aims to look at local-level data, such as housing, healthcare, and labor market, and correlate that information to the amount of financial distress individuals in those neighborhoods are in. Perhaps not surprisingly, areas with lower education levels, lower health insurance coverage, and lower homeownership rates are more likely to be behind on some of their financial obligations.
CRIME VICTIMS NEED HELP RECOVERING COURT-ORDERED RESTITUTION

The current collection rate is at 3%, according to the Maryland Crime Victims Resource Center, meaning 97% f court-ordered restitutions are not repaid. In one case, it took four years for a man whose car was stolen to receive any money from the individual convicted of stealing the vehicle.
