There were decreases across the board in the number of lawsuits and complaints filed against debt collectors in May, according to data released today by WebRecon.
There were 1, 500 lawsuits filed against collectors in May, alleging violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. That total is down 15% from the 1,776 suits that were filed in April, according to Webrecon. Overall, the number of FDCPA lawsuits is down 8% from a year ago, while the number of FCRA suits is up 26% and the number of TCPA lawsuits is 57% higher than the same period of 2015.
The number of complaints filed against debt collectors with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is also down 10%, compared with the first four months of 2015.
The 927 different companies sued in May was also lower, down from 950 in April. In May, 35% of all plaintiffs who filed suit had done so previously.
