DEBT COLLECTION COMPLAINTS DECLINE AMONG BROADER FALL IN MOST CATEGORIES

  • The number of debt collection complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau declined last month, compared with a month earlier, as the number of complaints declined broadly across most categories. Debt collection still ranked as the category with the most complaints last month, receiving nearly one-third of all complaints, followed by credit reporting and mortgages. The three credit bureaus remained as the companies that received the most complaints, according to the CFPB.

HOUSEHOLD DEBT INCREASES, BUT DELINQUENCY RATES FALL IN 1Q 

  • The amount of debt per household increased $136 billion in the first quarter of 2016, compared with the fourth quarter of 2015, reaching levels that have not been seen since 2011. But delinquency rates were at their lowest point since the second quarter of 2007, according to data compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Delinquency rates on all categories monitored — mortgages, auto loans, student loans, and credit cards — were all lower in the first quarter.
