DEBTOR’S PRISON
- Individuals who owe money on their student loans can’t hide from their financial obligations, even when they are making less than $1 an hour in prison, according to a new article. Borrowed can request a deferment or forbearance if they are going to be incarcerated, but there is no program to explicitly identify those individuals and allow them to put off making their payments until they are out of prison. There may be as many as 200,000 incarcerated individuals who still owe money on their student loans.
WHAT THE OPPOSITION IS SAYING
- Creditor’s rights representatives are sharing information about how individuals with unpaid debts can avoid “creditor harassment” or “relentless and aggressive” collection calls. One settlement service, which has not been immune from issues of its own, is pushing its product to help protect people from “unscrupulous operators.” Meanwhile, a bankruptcy attorney is advising potential clients to beware of “abusive collection tactics.”
EXTREME DEBT COLLECTIONS
- Another report on the growing problem of violent debt collectors in Russia, who are “terrorizing” households in order to collect on unpaid debts. Reports of firebombs and other violent incidents as organizations, especially micro-lenders, are trying to recoup their payments.
