COLORADO SHERIFF TURNS TO ONLINE COLLECTIONS

  • A Colorado county sheriff’s office is turning to a third-party, web-based service to collect on $311,000 in unpaid fees from inmates. The service, called Pay My Jailer, charges consumers to use the service to repay debts such as booking fees, commissary charges, and medical expenses. Pay My Jailer is a service offered by Advent Financial Services.

THE KINDLY COLLECTOR

  • An interesting profile of a municipal clerk in Illinois who handles the city’s debt collection accounts. The clerk displays thank-you notes written to him by people who owed debts and were able to work out payment arrangements with the city to pay them off. Taking the time to listen and being empathetic are his tools for success, he says.  Meanwhile, the town is struggling to identify and collect from delinquent consumers who owe millions in unpaid fines and taxes.

JANE, STOP THIS CRAZY THING

  • A comprehensive look at one woman’s plight with payday loans. It’s easy to see the hole that payday lenders fill – small-dollar loans for people who might not have access to credit cards – but it is also tragic to see the massive impact that the loans can have on people who are going to have troubles repaying the loan because they were forced to get a payday loan in the first place.
