$3.4 MILLION SETTLEMENT FOR COLLECTION FIRM

  • Collection law firm Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit that it allegedly engaged in the illegal practice of law in California. The suit calls for the firm to pay a total of $3.4 million including $904,000 in attorney’s fees. The suit included more than 82,000 participants.

While not very sexy, the case will determine whether it is a violation of the FDCPA to use the letterhead of a state attorney general when sending debt collection notices. A number of state attorneys general have filed briefs in support of the practice.
