Daily Digest – December 14. TCN, Global Connect Merging; Supreme Court To Hear FDCPA Case

TCN, GLOBAL CONNECT MERGE

  • Technology providers TCN and Global Connect have agreed to merge. Employees in Global Connect’s New Jersey offices will lead TCN’s East Coast operations. Global Connect’s customers will now become customers of TCN.

HELPING COLLECT FOR THE LITTLE GUY

  • An opportunity for collectors who are looking for work – Indepayment – a website used by freelance workers who need help collecting on unpaid invoices. Collectors can take batches of invoices and keep about one-third of what they recover.

SUPREME COURT TO HEAR ‘SPECIAL COUNSEL’ CASE

  • The Supreme Court will hear arguments to determine whether the methods used by the State of Ohio to collect on unpaid debts violate the FDCPA. Ohio’s Attorney General uses outside lawyers, called “special Acer Aspire One D150-1Bk AC Adapter counsels” who are authorized to collect on debts and can use the state AG’s letterhead. Opponents say this is misleading because those “special counsels” are not officers of the state.

FLORIDA CITY SEEKS DEBT COLLECTOR

  • The city of Delray Beach, Florida, is looking to hire a debt collector to collect nearly $1 million in unpaid parking tickets, part of $7 million in unpaid debt owed to the city.
