HEALTHCARE FACILITIES FALLING WAY SHORT IN COLLECTION EFFORTS: REPORT
- Healthcare practices collect none of their outstanding balances on 67% of their accounts, according to a published report. The size of the bill plays a large role in the amount collected, according to the data, which was compiled by the athenahealth network. For example, when the balance is $35 or less, the amount due is paid 40% of the time. But when the balance is $200 or more, the number of people paying drops to 6%.
MOST DOCTORS UNABLE TO ESTIMATE COST OF PROCEDURES THEY TREAT: SURVEY
- Doctors remain blindly unaware of the costs of the procedures they treat, which is a problem as healthcare costs spiral upwards and healthcare facilities struggle with increased amounts of unpaid bills. A survey of 400 emergency room doctors found that only 38% of them could accurately estimate the cost of treating three common ailments found in hospital emergency rooms. Doctors and healthcare staff must better understand the costs and be better prepared to talk about those costs with patients if they are to survive.

One law being debated in Congress — the Regulatory Accountability Act, for example — imposes 53 additional requirements on agencies looking to enact new rules, including trial-like hearings.
