Another TV station has gotten into the debt buying and forgiveness spirit.
This time, KMOV in St. Louis raised $12,500 to go out and purchase $1 million in medical debts for 512 individuals living in Missouri and taken steps to have those debts wiped away.
A number of TV stations across the country have partnered with RIP Medical Debt to find individuals in their viewing areas and raise funds to have debts forgiven.
More than 20% of individuals living in Missouri have a healthcare debt in collections, according to the Urban Institute.
RIP Medical Debt made the news back in June 2016 when it helped HBO’s John Oliver purchase and forgive $15 million of unpaid medical debt. The organization has also worked with nurses in Minnesota and a start-up healthcare company in California to purchase and forgive unpaid medical debts.
