ADVOCACY PUBLISHES REPORT BLASTING COLLECTORS, DEBT BUYERS AS ‘LAWSUIT FACTORIES’
- The Center for Responsible Lending, a non-profit consumer advocacy organization, has released a report about the impact of “abusive” debt collection practices in Oregon, saying that the state did not go far enough when it enacted a law that went into effect earlier this year. In conducting its analysis, the CRL looked at court records and filings between 2012 and 2016.
APPEALS COURT HEARS ARGUMENT IN ENGLISH’S SUIT TO BE ACTING CFPB DIRECTOR
- A panel of three judges appeared to remain unconvinced, just as a lower court did, that Leandra English has a rightful claim to be the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and should replace Mick Mulvaney, who was named acting director by President Trump. The panel of judges from the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia heard oral arguments on Thursday in the suit filed by English against President Trump and Mulvaney.
MEMBER OF SCAM OPERATION PLEADS GUILTY, FACING 20 YEARS IN PRISON
- Debbie Seright from Niagara Falls, N.Y., is facing up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 after she pleaded guilty on Friday to charges stemming from running a debt collection scheme that $1.1 million in payments, many of which coerced through intimidation or made on debts that were already paid in full. Seright will be sentenced in July.

A woman in Indiana — Amanda Burnett — went out a date with a man and when she declined the invitation for a second date by not responding to his text messages, the man sent her an invoice for her portion of the first date and threatened to send the account to a collection agency if the $39.52 balance was not paid.
