FTC BUREAU CHIEF: LACK OF DEBT COLLECTION RULE A ‘MISSED OPPORTUNITY’
- Thomas Pahl, the acting director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, sat down and shared some of his perspectives at this week’s RMA Conference, saying that the agency will continue to focus on identifying and going after the worst of the worst when it comes to debt collection scammers. Pahl also shared his thoughts about the CFPB and the FTC are working together under new CFPB acting director Mick Mulvaney, the delays associated with the CFPB’s proposed debt collection rule, and how the FTC can help the collection industry modernize itself to accommodate new and emerging communication methods.
TV STATION BUYS, FORGIVES $1 MILLION IN UNPAID MEDICAL DEBT
- A television station in Seattle has spent $12,000 to purchase $1 million in unpaid medical debts, with the purpose of having those debts forgiven. The purchase was facilitated by RIP Medical Debt. The station originally aired a story about the growing problem of unpaid medical debts and the burdens that it can place on individuals.
CONVERGENT OPENS NEW OFFICE IN PHOENIX
- Convergent Outsourcing has announced the opening of a new, larger call center in Phoenix. Calling it a “state-of-the-art” facility, the 22,000-square foot office space has 245 workstations, a training room, guest offices and a break room, the company announced.
WOMAN SUES, CLAIMING TO HAVE RECEIVED 1,500 CALLS AFTER REVOKING CONSENT
- A Virginia woman has filed a lawsuit against Portfolio Recovery Associates, claiming the company attempted to contact her more than 1,500 times after the woman revoked consent to be contacted. The woman is claiming injury under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act in that the calls wasted her time.
