The healthcare system is so broken that individuals are telling one of the nation’s largest healthcare providers that they simply wait for a letter from a collection agency and that tells them what needs to be paid when it comes to their medical bills.
The medical billing process has become so confusing that people are not 100% sure of what they owe until they get a letter from a collection agency, said David Krause, Vice President of the Business Improvement Group at Anthem, according to a published report.
“We need to find a way to make it clear to a member as soon as possible after a visit exactly how much they owe,” Krause said. “We need benefit design that is smarter and easier to understand.”
The most common call that a healthcare insurance company receives is one related to billing, Krause said.
Krause is speaking at the HIMSS18 conference in Las Vegas in March.
