BILL AIMED AT UNDOING OPERATION CHOKE POINT PASSES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
- A bill introduced in response to Operation Choke Point has passed the House of Representatives and now moves to the Senate for consideration. H.R. 2706, the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act of 2017 was introduced in May by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer [R-Mo.]. It passed in the House by a vote of 395-2.
AVERAGE AMERICAN CARRYING $15K IN CREDIT CARD DEBT: NERDWALLET
- The average American has more than $15,000 in credit card debt, according to data released yesterday by NerdWallet. Including mortgages, the average household has more than $131,000 of debt. Less than 20% of those surveyed said they pay their credit card balances in full every month.
FTC, FCC SIGN PARTNERSHIP TO COLLABORATE ON ONLINE CONSUMER PROTECTION
- The Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission have sorted out who will investigate and enforce what after the FCC moves forward with repealing net neutrality rules later this week. The two agencies released a Memorandum of Understanding that details the ways that each agency will protect consumers from unscrupulous internet service providers.
FEWER CONSUMERS EXPECTING DEBT PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE: FED SURVEY
- The number of Americans who are worried about being able to make their debt payments a year from now continues to decline, according to data released today by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Just over 12% of people expect to have problems making their debt payments a year from now, compared with 12.8% in October and 14.92% a year ago.
ILLINOIS COUNTY HIRES COLLECTION AGENCY
- Carroll County, Ill., is turning to a collection agency to help it recover unpaid fines, judgments, and traffic tickets. Credit Collection Partners, who is working with many circuit clerks in Illinois, has been approved to handle accounts from Carroll County, according to a published report.
MANY AMERICANS LOSING SLEEP OVER FINANCIAL SITUATION AS STRESS LEVELS KEEP RISING
- A survey of consumers by Prudential Financial shows that a fair number of them are losing sleep over their financial situation. Next to losing a loved one, being able to pay the bills is the biggest concern keeping Americans up at night, according to the survey.
